Unsplash
Unsplash is really huge! With millions of photos, you can find almost anything here. The cool thing is that you can usually use the photos without crediting the photographers. But always check the license, better safe than sorry!

Pexels is also great because the photos are well-tagged. So you can easily search for what you need. Plus, they regularly hold competitions for photographers. Maybe you’ll discover your new favorite image!
Pixabay
Pixabay is a true classic. Here you can find not only photos but also videos and illustrations. The selection is huge, and most things are really free. Perfect if you need something quickly and don’t have time for long searches.
Remember, even though the photos are free, you should always check the license terms. You don’t want any trouble later!

Again, the images are free and can be used without crediting the source.
Community-Driven Photo Websites
Are you looking for photos created and managed by a community? Then you are in the right place! These platforms thrive on contributions from their users. Here are a few places where you can find what you need:
Flickr
Flickr is more than just a platform to share your own photos with friends. It is also a huge source for free images. If you are looking for a specific topic or location, the chances are high that you will find it on Flickr. There are an estimated 10 billion photos there!
But be careful: If you want to use a photo commercially, you must filter for images that allow that. And read the license terms carefully. Sometimes you have to credit the author or are not allowed to modify the image.
Wikimedia Commons
The images on Wikimedia Commons are often Public Domain. This means you can use them for anything without worrying about copyright issues. This is, of course, super convenient! Still, you should always quickly check if there are any restrictions.
Openverse
Openverse is a project by WordPress that gives you access to millions of Creative Commons licensed images. The great thing about it is that you can find everything in one place and don’t have to hop between different websites. The search function is really good, and you can filter results by license. This way, you can quickly find the right image for your project.
What to Watch Out For
Sure, free photos are great, but before you start downloading wildly, there are a few things you absolutely need to check. Otherwise, things can get messy quickly, and nobody wants that.
Understanding License Terms
The most important thing first: Read the license terms! Each website has its own rules about what you can and cannot do with the images. Some images can only be used for personal purposes, while others can also be used commercially. Pay close attention to what is allowed to avoid copyright violations. It’s like Monopoly; nobody reads the rules, but in the end, everyone complains.
Attribution Requirements
Sometimes you have to credit the author of the photo when you use it. This is called attribution. You can usually find the information in the license. If you don’t credit the author when required, you are violating the license terms. Imagine stealing a poem and claiming you wrote it. Not cool, right?
Commercial Use
Do you want to use the photo for your business, for example on your website or in advertisements? Then you need to ensure that the license allows that. Not all free photos can be used commercially. Some are only released for editorial purposes. So, keep your eyes open when selecting images, or it could get expensive!
The Best Niche Websites
Sometimes you just need that one special image that perfectly fits your project. Here are a few websites that specialize in certain niches and might offer exactly what you are looking for.

From simple snacks to elaborate menus, everything is included. The images are really professional and will make you hungry right away.

You will find a colorful mix of different categories, from business to fashion to nature. The site is easy to use and offers a good selection of high-quality images.
